Essay wins grad student second graphics award

May 18, 2009

Bemly Randeniya did it again. The graphic information technology graduate student in the College of Technology and Innovation at ASU’s Polytechnic campus recently earned $1,500 for placing first in the GEF/Flint Group Technical Writing Contest given by the Gravure Association of America.

His essay, “Characterization of conductive inks in gravure printing”, will be published in the next issue of GRAVURE Magazine, a leading publication for the rotogravure industry, a printing process that engraves images onto cylinders for high-volume production.

The essay was mainly focused on “printed electronics” using the gravure printing process.

“The idea of ‘printed electronics’ is a relatively new concept compared to the traditional electronic circuitry manufacturing industry,” says Randeniya. “The graphic arts industry is putting every effort into gaining entry to this multibillion dollar market especially at a time when traditional printing is being supplanted by on-screen reading. Even though, it has been discussed more often in the last decade or so, it has not reached the expectations from the graphics art industry point of view. However, it is believed to be the next decade’s digital technology revolution if it results in higher production yields and increased quality levels.”

Randeniya was recently honored at Gravure’s Educators breakfast where he received the prize money and a certificate. He was honored last year at the Gravure Association of America’s annual Leadership Summit in New Jersey for the same prize. He is proud of his accomplishments and rightfully so.

He said that he received tremendous support from the printing and electronic industry research scientists and from plant managers, as well as his instructor Howard Nelson, and graduate advisor and department chair Thomas Schildgen for their continuous guidance throughout the research project.

Randeniya, who also received the outstanding graduate student 2009 honor, is an international student from Sri Lanka. Randeniya graduates in May.
