Sun Devils play strong during the first round in Tucson

The ASU Men's golf team sits in fifth place with a 2-over 290 after the first round of the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson. The Sun Devils are again fielding one of their youngest lineups with four freshmen and one sophomore taking to the course this week. TCU is in the lead with a 13-under 275. The Horned Frogs currently have four of their five players in the top seven places. New Mexico and UNLV are tied for second at 2-under (286).

Freshman Jesper Kennegard is leading the Sun Devils after the first round as he shot a 2-under 70 and sits in a tie for seventh. Sophomore Knut Borsheim is tied for 11th with a 1-under 71. Cameron Edens is tied for 34th with a 2-over 74 while fellow freshmen James Byrne and Stephen Gross are tied for 45th with 3-over 75's.

Also on the course, Sun Devil senior Phil Telliard, playing as an independent, is tied for seventh with a 2-under 70. The 54-hole tournament continues through Tuesday at Omni Tucson National Golf Course.
