  • Right: A little over a decade ago, David Paul was involved in a nearly fatal car accident that resulted in the loss of his eyesight and both his legs. He spent the next two years learning how to walk on prosthetic legs, learning to read Braille, and training to use a special computer system for the visually impaired. At ASU Paul studied with ASU’s Computer Science and Engineering program, managed to complete rigorous math courses and learn three different computer languages without the benefit of his sight and ultimately earned an economics degree in the W. P. Carey School of Business, with a 3.6 G.P.A. Left: At the age of 14, Yesenia Barraza arrived in the U.S. and quickly distinguished herself by becoming fluent in English and excelling as an honors student at Westview High School in Avondale. With the help of scholarships she earned through exemplary academic performance, Yesenia graduated from the Barrett Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and is the first person in her family to earn a university degree. A Leadership Scholarship Scholar, Yesenia’s thesis examined efforts to increase the enrollment and retention of first generation college students by enhancing parent involvement and the engagement of community organizations.
