Heather Rae, Academy Award nominated film director and producer, was a speaker in The Jonathan and Maxine Marshall Distinguished Lecture Series at Arizona State University. Rae has produced numerous documentaries and nurtured the work of dozens of Native American screenwriters and filmmakers. Her film, Frozen River, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.Photographer: Tom Story -

Mary Margaret Fonow, director of the School of Social Transformation, spoke at the formal launch event of the school. Lindsey McClintock, a fourth-year education major, kept the first-graders attention at Wood Elementary School in Tempe as one of more than 150 ASU early childhood pre-service teachers that were reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. The students in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership were participating in the “Read for the Record” annual reading campaign by Jumpstart, in an effort to set a world record by reading the same book on the same day to young children worldwide.Photographer: Tom Story -

Lindsay Cullen receives congratulations following a ceremony at the headquarters of PetSmart in Phoenix. Cullen, Hoge Day (right) and Justin Pasternak (not pictured) were the three winners in a design competition. PetSmart has teamed up with some innovative students at ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts who are creating a prototype doghouse that is better suited to a dog’s needs and is Earth-friendly, as well.Photographer: Tom Story
