Celebrate Earth Week with ASU
During Earth Week April 18–22, join students, faculty and staff on all four of Arizona State University’s campuses for several sustainability-themed events that include food, music, games, activities, the Farmers Market on the Tempe campus, as well as screenings of An Inconvenient Truth, and The Price of Sugar.
All Earth Week festivities support ASU’s university-wide sustainability vision to promote a healthy, robust society through the interconnectedness of environmental, economic and social systems that balances the availability of usable natural resources for present and future generations.

ASU Tempe campus Earth Week events:
Monday, April 18
6-7:30 p.m., Memorial Union Starlight Terrace (by the Engrained restaurant):
Join the Memorial Union Advisory Board and Sun Devil Dining for a fun, education-filled evening highlighting various aspects of the local food economy. Enjoy four dining courses of locally grown food selections and learn more about the sustainable food practices at ASU and throughout Arizona.

Tuesday, April 19

The Farmers Market on the ASU Tempe campus occurs every other Tuesday during the spring 2011 semester. The market is designed to promote sustainability, healthy eating, and green living practices among our students, faculty, and staff by providing educational opportunities and convenient access to a variety of locally grown and produced foods through a learning-living partnership with Arizona farmers and artisans. This Earth Week Farmers Market also will include displays on the source of our food compiled as part the SOS394 ASU Food Systems class, an applied learning experience that is a part of the Campus Living Laboratory Initiative.

Sustainability Series - Recycling Realities: ASU’s quest for zero solid waste. Featuring Dawn Ratcliffe, former ASU Tempe campus recycling coordinator and Alana Levine, ASU Recycling program manager. “Garbage” (vegan) soup and “Compost” (chocolate-crumb) cake is served. Enjoy a documentary screening: The Price of Sugar. Sponsored by the ASU Chapter of United Students for Fair Trade, this documentary gives viewers a new perspective on one of the most commonly used household ingredients. Narrated by Paul Newman, The Price of Sugar follows Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people to fight for their basic human rights. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate and at what human cost they are produced. Watch the trailer here.

Sustainable Business Ventures: Back to the Roots
The Campus Student Sustainability Initiative invites all ASU community members and young entrepreneurs to the Sustainable Business Ventures presentation, featuring Alejandro Velez and Nikhil Arora, co-founders of Back to the Roots. Back to the Roots (BTTR) was founded in 2009 by Alejandro Velez and Nikhil Arora as a 100-percent sustainable urban mushroom farm. Since then, Back to the Roots has transformed into a unique company focused on bringing sustainable grow-at-home products into households across the country. Their vision is to serve as a standard-bearer of innovation and responsibility in the community in order to inspire others to work towards a more sustainable future. Light snacks are served.

Teams from the ASU School of Sustainability and Global Institute of Sustainability including students, staff, and faculty help restore walking and hiking trails on “A” Mountain. Those who volunteer are invited to the Global Institute of Sustainability in Wrigley Hall following the restoration for a Chipotle lunch. Chipotle Fundraiser
On April 22, Chipotle is donating 50 percent of its proceeds from restaurant sales to an ASU School of Sustainability Sustainable Food Scholarship. Patrons must bring an event flyer, show a Tweet, or Facebook post on their mobile devices for the proceeds to benefit the scholarship.
The entire community is encouraged to dine at one of the following Chipotle locations: Mill Avenue and 11th Street (1038 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281), and Tempe Marketplace (2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway) and Baseline & Rural (815 E. Baseline Rd.).

Earth Day Festival
Join the Campus Student Sustainability Initiative for its Earth Day celebration – a full day of art, lots of music, food, information, and activities. Whether it is getting your bike registered and repaired, climbing a rock wall, listening to great local and national musicians, or learning about the tremendous sustainability offerings at ASU, there will be fun for everyone. The nationally upcoming band Stükenburg headlines the event at 9 p.m.; former ASU quarterback and musician Samson Szakacsy and his band open at 8 p.m. Other local bands – including While We’re Up, The Panderers, and ASU’s own a cappella groups Priority Male and Pitchforks perform throughout the day.

In honor of Earth Week, The Undergraduate Student Government and Campus Student Sustainability Initiative teamed up to bring Eric Schlosser, the nationally recognized food expert, to campus. Schlosser authored the best-selling book, Fast Food Nation, and co-produced and starred in the highly acclaimed documentary, Food, Inc. With an increasing awareness of social justice and environmental issues related to the food production and consumption practices in the United States, Schlosser’s highly engaging talk is sure to be timely and informative.

Earth-extravaganza: An educational fair highlights the university’s sustainable efforts and integrates tips for people to use in their everyday lives.
Student organizations participate in a recycled art competition where they are encouraged to create Sparky from recyclable items. All art competition entries are displayed and judged at the fair, and the winners receive T-shirts and a plaque that will be displayed at the ASU Wells Fargo student center.
Meet sustainability-minded organizations from ASU and the surrounding community, and try locally sourced and prepared complimentary food from the Phoenix Public Market, Fair Trade and ARAMARK. PAB is providing Earth-friendly giveaways including T-shirts, pens, and seed packets.

Earth Fair
This year’s Earth Fair on the West campus focuses on alternate and smart forms of transportation. A Zipcar is on display, and information is provided about Valley Metro services as well as motorcycle and scooter safety. Bring your bicycle and get it registered! Information about the Community Supported Agriculture program on the West campus and the sustainable products offered by ARAMARK Food Services and the ASU Bookstores also is available.

Polytechnic eARTh Day
ASU students, faculty, and staff are invited to celebrate the ART-themed eARTh Day! Enjoy the creativity of fellow students, faculty, and staff as seen in their photographs that are included in a photo contest, or enjoy chili from the Chili Cook-off. Participate in a slew of interactive activities, such as making newspaper pots with veggie seedlings, tie dyeing used shirts and playing a sustainability Jeopardy!® game. Other plans include featuring local/organic food products, an eco-fashion display, live music, a beehive exhibit, bike tune-ups and much more.
