Pep rallies and displays of Sun Devil spirit were held throughout the week, leading up to the big Homecoming game, Oct. 30. An employee from Rochell’s Salon and Spa holds up a donation from freshman nursing major Kelly Chow during the Locks of Love event at the Downtown Phoenix campus. The event raised a hundred dollars for cancer research and collected 29 ten-inch ponytails, which will be used to make wigs for children who suffer hair loss from various causes. The Fletcher Lawn on ASU’s West campus was transformed into a fall carnival – complete with games, carnival attractions and a haunted house. The Tempe event had a total of 39 participants, 140'' of hair donated and more than $1800 donated. Students gather on the ASU Polytechnic campus for a ghostly night, held as part of the 2010 ASU Devilish Homecoming activities. With glow sticks decorating their instruments, the ASU pep band gets Lantern Walk participants in the proper Sun Devil mood. ASU students begin the trek up Tempe Butte to take part in the Lantern Walk, which began in 1917 as a symbolic passing of the torch from the senior class to the junior class. Sparky and the Sun Devil Spirit Squad entertain the crowd prior to the lighting of the “A” during the 2010 Lantern Walk. The Arizona State “A” is outlined in lights and illuminated by fireworks during the finale of the Lantern Walk. Since Homecoming and Halloween fell on the same weekend, ghosts and goblins participated in the Homecoming parade, along with an abundance of devils – Sun Devils that is. Pi Kappa Phi and Pi Beta decorated their float with Sparky as the “Ruler of the Underworld.” Martha and Robert Christiansen of Tempe cheer for the entries in the Homecoming Parade. Joseph Watters, who was Homecoming King in 1960, returned to serve as the 2010 Parade’s Grand Marshall. Adelante helps assist students achieve their goal of graduation, provide students with the resources to overcome barriers, succeed in their academic pursuits and maintain pride in Latino/Chicano/Hispanic culture. A symbolic cougar gets dragged behind the American Indian Council float. The representation of big cat’s demise was prophetic, as the Sun Devil shut out the Cougars in the Homecoming football game. John Goodman, former ASU quarterback and retired Marine Corps general, served as “Guest Sparky” and was given the honor of driving the pitchfork into the turf as part of the pre-game activities. Quarterback Steve Threet (14) led the Sun Devils to a 42-0 route of the Washington State Cougars. Treet passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns in ASU’s Homecoming game. Jake Plummer, former ASU and Arizona Cardinal quarterback, chatted up the fans and signed autographs for Alejandra (left) and Alex Ramierz (right). The Devils looked impressive in every facet of their game including defense, which held the Cougars to 264 yards.
