ASU is celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez with a day of service and learning.

ASU’s School of Letters and Sciences, the City of Phoenix and AARP are inviting the public to participate in a Garcia West Neighborhood Clean Up and Graffiti Removal as part of the annual Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning. The event starts at 8 a.m., March 27, at the northeast corner of 28th Avenue and Pima Street in West Phoenix.

Activities include cleaning up alleyways and curbs, graffiti removal and painting a senior citizens’ home.

Volunteers will be treated to a light breakfast and sack lunch.

“The School of Letters and Sciences believes that community service is a key component of a well-rounded education,” said Carmen King, a Spanish lecturer with the School of Letters and Sciences. “As part of the school’s mission, and in the interest of our Spanish Language in Cultures Club, we hope to annually participate in the Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning. This event is not only a great way to become familiar with our community’s needs, but also to recognize the great contributions that Cesar Chavez achieved in our country’s struggle for racial and social equality.”
