West campus presents urban art festival
“Last Fridays, an Urban Art Festival” is scheduled for 4 to 10 p.m., Feb. 26, at Arizona State University’s West campus. This free outdoor event, presented by several student clubs and community groups, is designed to provide a venue for students, local artists, performers, businesses and community members to showcase their talent and gain exposure.
“Our goal is to increase awareness and engagement of the arts in West Valley communities,” said ASU student Rebecca Martos, president of the Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance (IAP) Club on the West campus.
Entertainment includes BMX freestyle/stunt shows and autograph sessions featuring X-Games and Dew Tour gold medalists, live music, break dancing, artist demonstrations and a Kid Zone providing children the opportunity to explore their creativity through interactive art projects and alternative materials. Works of art will be available for purchase.
“The event will give attendees the chance to meet and speak with the artists personally," Martos said. "We invite the entire community to come share in the fun.”
Vendor registration for the event is required and will be available the day of the event; however, pre-registration is preferred. Vendor registration forms are available online at https://orgsync.com/forms/show/18580.
There is no charge for art spaces. All vendors must donate 20 percent of total earnings to Wheels In Motion, a nonprofit organization working to provide creative outlets for underprivileged communities and at-risk youth.
In addition to Wheels and Motion and the IAP Club, sponsors include the West campus student groups CELL (Concilio Estudiantil de Lideres Latinos), Kurdish Youth Club, Young Democrats and Teachers of the Future.
ASU’s West campus is at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix. The festival will be held in the Delph Courtyard of the University Center Building and on the basketball courts adjacent to the Sands Classroom Building.
