Photographic exhibition features 'fanciful, bizarre'

The ASU Herberger Institute School of Art presents An Equation of the Fanciful and Bizarre, a group photographic exhibition, Feb. 1-25, at the Northlight Gallery on the ASU Tempe campus. The exhibition features work by members of the ASU Photographers’ Association, and is juried by Joel Meyerowitz, a New York-based, award-winning photographer. A public reception also is scheduled Monday, Feb. 8 from 7–9 p.m. in the Northlight Gallery.

ASU’s Barrett, the Honors College, hosted Meyerowitz during the fall 2009 semester as its distinguished 2009 Flinn Foundation Centennial Lecturer. In addition to the formal lecture, “A Look Behind the Lens,” held at the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music’s Katzin Concert Hall, Meyerowitz met with students and participated in informal public talks on a number of ASU’s campuses about his more than four decades of work as a documentary photographer. Members of the ASU Photographers’ Association also met with Meyerowitz during an open jurying session where he reviewed their work and selected the images for the An Equation of the Fanciful and Bizarre exhibition from more than 200 prints. During the jurying process, Meyerowitz remarked at the high quality and variety of work being produced in the School of Art, describing the work at different times as: “delicate,” “tender,” “jarring,” or “grotesque,” but all “strangely beautiful.” To learn more about the exhibition, visit the Northlight Gallery Web site.

ASU undergraduate and graduate photography-major students can join the ASU Photographers’ Association. Each fall semester, the club organizes a juried exhibition and invites a respected photographer or photo scholar to be the juror and guest lecturer. To support the event, the club hosts a silent-auction fundraiser each spring. Both the fall lecture and spring auction are free and open to the public.

The School of Art is a division of Herberger College of the Arts at Arizona State University. Its printmaking, photography and art education programs are nationally ranked in the top 10, and its Master of Fine Arts program is ranked eighth among public institutions by U.S.News & World Report. The school includes four student galleries for solo and group shows by graduate and undergraduate art and photography students: Gallery 100, Harry Wood, Northlight, and Step.
