A program on KJZZ about a proposed H1N1 sick-leave policy in Pima County government included an interview with James G. Hodge Jr., Lincoln Professor of Health Law and Ethics at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, and Director of the College of Law's Public Health Law and Policy Program.

Hodge spoke with Steve Goldstein, host of "Here And Now" on Friday, Oct. 23, about the government's proposed policy that would require employees to stay home from work if they exhibit symptoms of the H1N1 virus.

"This is consistent with the type of policy we're seeing implemented nationally, both in the public and private sectors," said Hodge, a national expert whose work focuses on public health information privacy law and ethics, emergency legal preparedness, legal issues of communicable disease control, and health care reform. "They have presented guidelines for how and when people might pose a risk to others. And if employees don't make good choices, employers are in a position to do what's necessary, consistent with some good guidelines, to make sure others in the workplace are not put at risk."

Through scholarly and applied work, Hodge delves into multiple areas of public health law, global health law, ethics, and human rights. He is director of the College's Public Health Law, Policy, & Innovation Program, and he teaches Health Law, Ethics, and Policy, Public Health Law and Ethics, and Global Health Law and Policy. Before joining the College of Law faculty in 2009, Hodge was a Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, and a Core Faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. He is a Senior Scholar at the Centers for Law and the Public's Health: A Collaborative at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, President of the Public Health Law Association, and Vice-Chair of the ABA Public Health Interest Group.
