American Alliance honors Corbin with highest award

Phoenix resident Charles B. Corbin, professor emeritus, Exercise and Wellness at Arizona State University, was recently honored by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) with the Luther Halsey Gulick Medal, the organization’s highest honor in recognition of long and distinguished service to the health, physical education, recreation, and dance professions. Presented on April 2, 2009, at the Alliance’s national convention in Tampa, FL, Corbin was recognized for his leadership, dedication, and distinguished career in physical education.

Considered as one of the leading scholars in physical education, Corbin has published more than 200 journal articles and is the senior author, sole author, contributing author, or editor of more than 70 books, including Fitness for Life (5th ed.), Concepts of Physical Fitness (14th ed.), and Concepts of Fitness and Wellness (7th ed.). His books are among the most widely adopted high school and college texts in fitness and wellness and have won Texty and McGuffey Awards from the Text and Academic Authors Association.

A lifetime member of AAHPERD, Corbin has provided more than 40 years of service to this organization. He has presented keynote addresses at more than 40 state AHPERD conventions and has made major addresses in more than 15 different countries. He is past president and fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. His excellence in service, writing, and research has resulted in honors from AAHPERD, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education, and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, among others.

With origins dating back to 1885, AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion and education, and all specialties related to achieving a healthy lifestyle. AAPHERD is organized geographically into six districts and is composed of five national associations: the American Association for Health Education, the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and the National Dance Association.
