Master's degree facilitates career change to accounting

Starting this August, people who possess a bachelor’s degree and a desire for a career change to accounting may pursue the new online version of the master’s in professional accounting (MPAc) degree offered by Arizona State University’s School of Global Management and Leadership (SGML). Inquiries are coming in from around the country from potential students interested in this unique program.

“The MPAc program is designed specifically for individuals whose bachelor’s degree is in a field other than accounting,” says Ken Ferris, SGML accounting chairman. “Graduates meet the educational requirements for Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in Arizona and 47 other states.”

The online MPAc program may be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis. (While the online program starts in Fall 2008, the full complement of courses for students wishing to pursue it full-time will not be available until Spring 2009.) Ferris says students typically will complete the 10-course, 30-credit sequence in three to five semesters, depending on their course load.

SGML also will continue to offer the traditional version of MPAc, with classes offered at ASU’s West campus in northwest Phoenix. This face-to-face program with evening classes also may be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis.

“Regardless of the format they choose, MPAc students learn technical and professional accounting skills that lay the foundation for success in today’s rapidly changing business environment,” says John Dallmus, MPAc program coordinator. “The MPAc program helps students develop skills including critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and the ability to communicate effectively.”

The School of Global Management and Leadership will continue to offer its post baccalaureate certificate program in accounting for students who seek a career change to accounting but who are not interested in receiving a master’s degree.

All SGML programs are accredited by AACSB International, the world’s leading accrediting agency for collegiate business programs. For more information, visit http://sgml.asu.edu/.
